Gravity Challenge: What Happens to Your Body When You Stand Up?
Share
Have you ever stood up too quickly and felt lightheaded, dizzy, or like the energy drained from your body?
You’re not imagining it. Gravity really does challenge your system.
For many people, these symptoms are tied to how well their body can maintain blood flow back to the heart and brain when moving from lying down to standing. But until now, there hasn’t been an easy way to see what’s actually happening in your own body.
That’s why we created the Gravity Challenge. This new feature in the Lumia app gives you a window into how your blood flow, heart rate, and symptoms change with posture.
Why This Matters
When you go from lying down to standing, gravity pulls blood toward your legs and away from your brain. Normally, the body is supposed to compensate by tightening blood vessels in the legs to keep blood flowing upward.
But if your system struggles to adjust, you might notice:
-
Feeling Lightheaded or dizzy
-
Feeling Unsteady on your feet
-
Fatigued or “crashing out” after standing
The Gravity Challenge helps you spot these responses in real time and track how they change over days, weeks, or months.
What the Gravity Challenge Shows You
In just a few minutes, you’ll learn how your body reacts to standing:
-
Flow Index: See how much your blood flow to the head changes
-
Heart Rate: Track how hard your heart is working to keep up
-
Symptoms: Record how you're feeling, from mild to severe
By repeating the test, you can start connecting the dots:
✅ Are your symptoms worse in the morning?
✅ Do hydration or extra salt make a difference?
✅ Is there a pattern after poor sleep or stress?
It’s like a personal experiment, with your own data guiding the way.
How It Works
The Gravity Challenge is available in the Lumia app (with the Lumia wearable). Once you start, it guides you through a simple process:
-
Lie down and relax for a few minutes
-
Stand up and stay still as the app tracks your data
-
Review your Flow Index, heart rate changes, and symptoms
Over time, these snapshots build a picture of how your body handles gravity and how your daily habits may play a role.
A Quick Note
The Gravity Challenge isn’t a diagnostic tool. It’s designed to help you observe personal trends and spark conversations with your healthcare provider. Always talk to your doctor before making changes to your routine.
